Common oculomotor nerve paralysis
An 80 years old patient with a history of diabetes and hypertension, came to the acupuncture office complaining of diplopia (double vision) and having eyelid ptosis with right infero-lateral deviation eyeball.
This disease had the onset about 6 months ago. Neurological investigations including MRI, performed immediately after the onset of the illness, did not reveal the presence of any organic cause. By presenting to the acupuncture cabinet, specialized treatments have not revealed neurological improvement.
After the first two sessions of acupuncture the signs and the symptoms have disappeared. He continued for 10 sessions of acupuncture. He has been followed for 4 years and had no relapse.
À frigore (peripheral) facial paralysis
Among the cases of peripheral facial paralysis resolved successfully with a large number of patients with age between 20 and 80 years old I have noticed a 75 years old patient with hypertension, diabetes and a history of breast cancer surgery, who came to the acupuncture office after 2 weeks of the onset of the disease. The first symptom was retroauricular pain followed after several days of numbness and heaviness of the left half of the face. Part of the affected face, later became flaccid and had no expression with deviation the mouth to the right, wide palpebral fissure, with permanent feeling of burning and dryness in the eye. For the patient it was difficult to frown, blink, close the eye or make grimaces.
Following expert advice, neurologist guided her to acupuncture, because corticosteroids were not recommended as he has diabetes.
After 12 sessions of acupuncture the above signs and symptoms have been resolved completely.
Among patients with trigeminal neuralgia I’ve noticed an 80 years old patient. She come to the acupuncture office, complaining of daily severe paroxysmal facial pain like electric currents in the right half of her face with mandibular starting point triggered by talking, eating or brushing her teeth. Her voice was whispered.
Specialized neurological consult accompanied by a MRI exam has revealed the presence of decalcification with a bony canal wall thinning of the mandibular branch of the fifth cranial (trigeminal) nerve, this being a possible cause of neuralgia.
Following a series of 12 sessions of acupuncture the pain has diminished in intensity and pain attacks were less frequent, allowing her to perform daily activities, and has, surprisingly, regained her clear voice.
A 43 years old patient, diagnosed with Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis, had the history of a failed attempt of “in vitro” fertilisation. A possible cause of infertility has been considered by gynecologists, that has been a significant increase of uterine fibroma evidenced by serial ultrasound examinations. The dimensions of uterine fibroma has increased from 2.36 / 2.48 cm to 3.14 / 3.10 cm in just two and a half months.
Only 12 sessions of acupuncture treatment were necessary to reduce the size of uterine fibromas to 1.6 / 1.6 cm and the disappearance of bulging uterine surface (shown by ultrasound scan).
Latest dimensions of uterine fibroma were considered by gynecologists small enough to begin a new program of “in vitro” fertilisation.
Interphalangeal joint arthrosis
An 83 years old patient, with a history of hypertension, came to the acupuncture office, showing a proximal interphalangeal joint arthrosis of his left ring finger.
When his fingers of his left hand clutched into a fist, followed by extension of the fingers, the ring finger was stuck in the flexed position, and it needed the help of his right hand to regain its normal position. Considering that all the hardwork was done mostly with his left hand, it is possible that in time he has developed this condition.
A series of 12 sessions of acupuncture have been sufficient to achieve complete healing and for 2 years being under observation, not relapse occurred.
Two sisters of 41 and 46 years old came to the acupuncture office with amenorrhea. The amenorrhea was present for approximately 8 months, preceded for the last 2 years of irregular menstrual cycles. This condition had a family history, their mother and grandmother suffered premature menopause at the age of 40 years.
The older patient was a smoker. Previous, both patients were medically polyinvestigated.
After 3 or 4 sessions of acupuncture treatment the menstrual cycle has reappeared and were required 3 sets of 12 sessions of acupuncture to consolidate the treatment and to be sure the cycles will still occur regularly.
Glaucoma complicated with herpetic keratitis
A 61 years old patient has came to the acupuncture office. It was an acute episod of herpetic keratitis and the patient has already began, before she has come to my office, specialized ophthalmology treatment. She has a history of repeated acute episodes of herpetic keratitis with uveitis sequelae and glaucoma in chronic allopathic treatment.
By conducting a series of 12 sessions of acupuncture, obviously, along with allopathic treatment, the cure of herpes keratitis was greatly accelerated, and subsequent ocular tension was no longer required to be controlled by medicine, to the surprise of the specialist ophthalmology doctor.
The patient continues to conduct two series of acupuncture sessions per year. Three years have passed since the first session of acupuncture and she is still regularly under control of the eye specialist , the ocular tension was maintained within normal limits without medication and the herpetic keratitis had never relapsed.
This proves the importance of collaboration between the allopathic doctor and the acupuncturist for the benefit of the patients, the importance of acupuncture as a medical science to solve severe complicated cases.
Scapulohumeral periarthritis (shoulder pain)
A patient, aged 80, came to the acupuncture office presenting for several months a migratory pain on the right shoulder. The abduction of the arm during the usual daily activities gave him a forearm pain radiating to the dorsal aspect of the hand and posterior side of the neck and the interscapular region. The most intense pain occured during the night and it didn’t let him to sleep.
After 4 sessions of acupuncture the shoulder pain was much reduced and then, after 10 sessions the symptoms disappeared and the mobility resumed.
A patient aged 83, diagnosed with right knee arthritis for many years, came to the acupuncture office in full breakthrough pain with swollen painful knee joint as well as skin redness and reduced mobility. The symptoms worsened when walking and improved after rest. The morning stiffness was present or occured after sitting or standing for long periods of time. It has been observed the crackle sound by passive movement of the knee joint.
Even after the first session was observed noticeable improvement in terms of pain, joint mobility and reducing circumference.
After 2 series of 12 sessions of acupuncture all joint symptoms and signs disappeared.
A patient aged 60, came to the acupuncture office, suffering from chronic rhinitis whose symptoms were exacerbated during the winter. On examination it was observed nasal obstruction with thick mucopurulent secretion and chronic congestion of the nasal hypertrophied mucosa, hyposmia (reduced sense of smell), bouts of sneezing, and overnight his sleep apnea required a ventilation unit.
Even after the first session, nasal obstruction which caused his insomnia, decreased so much that in the very first night he no longer needed the ventilation unit and rhinorrhea turned from chronic obstructive mucopurulent secretion in a colorless watery one that hasn’t so much bothered him as in the past, allowed him now to breathe normally.
Obviously, the patient is suffering, extended over a long period of time, requires annualy 2 series of acupuncture treatment.
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
An 80 years old patient came to the acupuncture office, suffering from a progressive decrease in hearing. She has been complaining of tinnitus in the last 3 years, predominantly in the left ear, bothering her especially at night.
ENT specialist examination revealed no organic cause. In just 10 sessions of acupuncture, tinnitus has been reduced to such an extent that could easy fall asleep.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
A patient, aged 52, has come to the acupuncture office complaining of pain in the left temporomandibular joint. The debut was 2-3 weeks ago, the pain was aggravated by chewing food or talking, with crackles in the joint, limited mouth opening, what kept her from speaking or chewing easily. It wasn’t any detectable inflammatory signs at tegument.
A series of 10 sessions of acupuncture were sufficientto achieve complete healing of the temporomandibular joint.
A patient, aged 55, came to the acupuncture office diagnosed with asthma since teenage. The asthmatic episodes were triggered by common allergens as pollen, dust insect, cold and tiredness and she was in remission using inhaler. She complained also of seasonal allergic rhinitis and typically felt her hands and feet cold.
After the first session of acupuncture weather worsened and it snowed a lot, so at the second session she had to travel a long distance in the cold and snow and, surprisingly, asthma attack, usually triggered by cold, didn’t appeared and she said, with amazements, she never felt tired walking.
Subsequently, respiratory function tests were improved and, understanding the benefits of acupuncture sessions and their prophylactic role, she comes to acupuncture office to perform 2 series of sessions per year.
Pain in the elbow (tennis player’s elbow – lateral humeral epicondylitis)
A patient, aged 40, worker, came to the acupuncture office with an older right elbow pain, with the starting point at the lateral epicondyle. When he performed flexion and rotation, the pain radiated to the hand and forearm up to the shoulder and back, with limitation of motion and poor hand tightening. The pain was accentuated by lifting objects and exposure to cold.
After only 10 sessions pain and joint mobility, which were much improved, allowed him to resume activity.
A patient, aged 52, suffering from essential hypertension with allopathic treatment, came to the acupuncture office. Previously, maximum of his blood pressure reached 190/110 mm Hg and frequently its systolic reading was 150 mmHg. Important increases of his blood pressure were accompanied by headaches predominantly occipital and frontal. Major pathological personal history include: hiatal hernia with frequent acid regurgitation, pain and fullness in the epigastrium.
After 3 sets of each 12 acupuncture sessions, digestive manifestations were much more improved and the decreased blood pressure requiring dose reductions of his allopathic medicines.
A 34 years old female patient with a long history of migraines came to my acupuncture office. Sometimes the headache could last all day, long working hours stress in front of the computer at her office. Sometimes, headaches occured late at night, preventing her from sleeping or awakening her. Most commonly, the piercing pain occurs on the forehead and behind her eyeballs and sometimes the pain location includes the temples with dizziness, visual disturbances, digestive phenomena as nausea, vomiting.
Premenstrual migraine episodes were frequently accompanied by pelvic and back pain.
After the first 10 sessions of acupuncture the intensity of headaches were much more reduced, allowing her to rest at night. After 3 series of sessions, the headaches have completely disappeared , being under observation for 1 year.
Stiff neck (torticolis)
A 46 years old patient came to the acupuncture office, complaining of severe pain of the right side of the neck, muscle contracture of the pain side that make her keep rotated and tilted her head on the right shoulder. Trying to move her neck intensified the pain. She said that two days ago she was cooking in her kitchen with the window wide opened . Awakened next morning, she wasn’t able unable to raise her head from the pillow.
Even after the first acupuncture session her neck pain was stopped immediately and the neck could move freely. After 10 sessions of acupuncture she was cured.
Ventricular extrasystoles (ventricular premature beats)
A 68 years old patient without a history of heart problems came to the acupuncture office, being previously diagnosed with ventricular premature beats that were highlighted by clinical exam and serial EKGs. This condition occurred because of a prolonged physical fatigue. Extrasystoles frequency was more than 30 / h, appeared bigeminy, trigeminy and sometimes 5 premature beats in a row without any symptom.
After only 12 sessions of acupuncture treatment ventricular arrhythmia was fully resolved and being closely observe in the next two years, it never relapsed.
A 61 years old female patient with history of two lumbar disc hernia operation, came to the acupuncture office , complaining of recurrence of symptoms in just few weeks from her last lumbar spine surgery.
The patient said that lumbar pain radiated predominantly on the left leg as a quasi-permanent strong burning along the sciatic nerve distribution area, exacerbated by walking, bending or coughing. The pain was associated with permanent numbness in the left hip, posterolateral thigh, shin and foot side. Cutaneous sensitivity of these areas was low. By palpation, it was detected bilateral lombar muscle contracture. Also there were detectable neurological signs suggestive for sciatic nerve pathology: the abolition of achilles reflex, the preservation of patellar reflex and there was a slight muscle atrophy on the back of the left leg. Passive flexion of the thigh on the abdomen, with the knee in extension was limited and painful due to sciatic nerve elongation (Laseguè positive sign). The pain kept her from sleeping and the accumulated fatigue caused her dizziness.
After a series of 12 sessions of acupuncture, pain was resolved and she regained normal mobility, remaining only a slight numbness on the dorsal side of her left foot which were also resolved in the next few sessions and she had no more insomnia.
